stranger danger!
Parents,
We talked about stranger danger in our class this week, please make sure to talk to your kids at home about it. An incident happened in one of the bountiful schools (recently), where a car pulled up and a man inside started talking to a female student (who happened to walk past), the man in the car wanted the girl to come in the car to look at some pictures, the girl said no and ran fast into her classroom. SCARY!!!!
Please make sure to talk to your kids about strangers and its dangers:
-not to talk to strangers
-not to give out personal information
-not to get into cars/ vehicles with strangers
-to get help from any teachers or staff in school if they encounter a stranger
(if possible, try to remember what the stranger looks like)
Thanks for spreading the word!
We want your kids to be safe!!

( Jan 27th Jan 31st) Please make sure to SIGN UP ASAP!!!!!!!!!!
Please note the early out schedule all week:
AM CLASS: 8:45am-10:50am
PM CLASS-11:25am- 1:25pm
Please be on time in dropping them off and picking them up!

Please if you have other older and younger children that they wait in the hallway during SEP conferences!
Please be on time of earlier for your SEP conference as our schedule is packed tightly, being late puts others off schedule!
2. Chinese New Year Party, will be held January 31th-friday in my classroom ( which is the actual day of Chinese New Year) Our cool moms are planning it!
3. Chinese New Year Program-----Please make sure your read the previous post on all the information.
4. January 20-21st (mon and tues) has NO SCHOOL!!! ENJOY a 4 day weekend!!!!!!!
5. Confusion with dashes and dots, I hope I didn't confuse many of you, but with the 10 frames worksheets where the children are drawing dots, for example 58, they can draw 58 dashes instead of dots (if their little hands gets too tired)
BUT for the addition worksheets, please still draw dots/circles. Please follow the format that I have send home on the yellow paper.
6. Library slips, there are still missing slips from the AM class! PM class has all library slips turned in!!! YAY! Remember, no library slips = your child cannot check out books
7. If you have concerns or questions, please feel free to talk to me, of email, I checked my emails frequently.
8. There are still some children coming in late from recess, pretty please talk to your child to watch for their class and to hear their bell, coming in late is becoming a habit for some, please help me tell them at home.
Agenda for our 3 day week next week:
1. Chinese--- We will be reviewing our 3D shapes and doing more comparision between 3D and 2D shapes) example circle and Sphere ( circle is flat but sphere is not) etc
2. Math, we will still continue 1-60, your child can dashes but they have to be individually draw, example 60, they have to draw 60 dashes. We will keep working on addition, please review with them at home.
* a common mistake that I am noticing, that some children miss a whole 10 frame. example, the number 52, they only draw 42 dashes because after drawing 40 dashes, when they proceed to draw the next set, they automatically count 51,52 already, even though it is suppose to be 41,42,
Please make sure that your practice with them at home.
* a trick that a lot of children have been using, that instead of counting from scratch everytime, they count each 10 frame as 10, 20,30, 40, 50,
3. Art, we will make Chinese masks in preparation for Chinese New Year!
Have a greatttttt weekend!

CHINESE NEW YEAR PROGRAM!
TIME: 6PM-8PM (might finish earlier or end a little later, give or take)
VENUE: BOUNTIFUL HIGH
DATE/DAY: 7TH FEB, 2013-FRIDAY
What Is Chinese New Year?
- Chinese New Year is a very important and big event (bigger than Christmas!) in my country, I hope to share some little insight on what Chinese New Year is. It is basically the new year (on the Chinese Luna Calendar, which is different every year) We believe that we need to get ready before New Year comes, we clean the house before, buy new clothes, shoes because we want to be clean, to look our best, to have a new start for the New Year. We do not clean the house during the Chinese New Year ( which last a whole week!) because we believe that we are 'sweeping/ cleaning away good luck' This year Chinese New Year falls on January 31st, Friday ( which is also the day of our classroom party!) We believe the color red is a good luck color and we wear the color red and decorate our house with red packets , red cloths to bring in good luck. There is short story on why red is a good luck color ( I will show the video to your kids, it is in Chinese but I think it is simple to understand!) On the Eve of Chinese New Year, we have a big dinner with immediate family and grandparents, this dinner is important, we believe everyone of the family members need to be there because families are important in the Chinese culture. We eat a big feast and it usually have special noodles( this noodles symbolizes good luck, longevity, good health etc (all the good stuff). The children will try the best to stay up as late as possible because we believe that the longer they stay up, the longer their parents will live! :) Chinese New Year morning, we wake up early, shower, put on our new attire, shoes, make sure we look our best, we kneel down and take 2 mandarin oranges (which symbolizes good luck) and present it to our parents, we greet them with best wishes like ( good health, happy life, etc) and then take our mandarin oranges and give us red packets( filled with money) and wish us good luck wishes in return ( success in school, good health, etc) then we go to our relatives houses and wish our grandparents and aunts and uncles. This is really fun for the kids especially because we have a lot of red packets (which means good luck) and money! yay! There are usually a lot of different snacks and candies during Chinese new year. We usually have a big lunch/ feast with our extended family (usually in the grandparents house) and play games like mahjong, card games, watch movies etc. It is such a fun time. The rest of the Chinese New Year week is for visiting friends/ neighbors and just spending time with family.
*hope this helps!
Special things to note for the Chinese New Year Program:
- Please do NOT wear black clothes during the program, black color clothes symbolizes death, funeral, this is very bad omen to wear for Chinese New Year! please please please, please!
-all boys and girls should wear a red T shirt (michaels, walmart or target sells cheap plain white shirt for kids), preferably with no words on it, just plain red, if not you can wear a shirt inside out, and blue jeans or brown pants or leggings (For the girls) *if you have a Chinese attire, your child is most welcome to wear it, please check with me, if you are not sure!
Do NOT wear sleeveless attire!
- For the boys, please make sure their hair is gel back and combed nicely
-For the girls, please make sure their hair is tied into 2 buns![](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/blogger_img_proxy/AEn0k_tFe1WKWGUHi1alxcG1HaVhVqGs487l5sShhUaMZD4Hc_Rhe38EXa9tRVqzfag8Zdrx8dH6SXvlUgtWs2mIfxkDkOGV7_3Vfy6u0iwf30mwHjlLggQ56qpIduVcMVBnpFeHGhRgoROe0RL1t4s1S8uxCy4fpueHfuJkExWRhK2qAoTd5UZPZuqMhPvHbS5wDkKmcrqH-7PK1rlHZ1qaKhsjSvhkmyN3xiXZaTAHDU5bpgE=s0-d)
(see picture for details), try to use red ribbons at the bottom of buns, you are welcome to use glitter on their hair too.
*if you want to put make up on them, you are welcome to BUT, please don't overdo the make up!
-Please make sure you come early for the program as we are the first to perform, please come at 5:40pm, DO NOT BE LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We still need to get ready and warm up before the program starts, I would advise coming early to get good seats and good parking!
-The program will be as follows, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade and 4th grade.
- Please make sure that after our cute kids perform (for kindergarten) that you are in the hallway, waiting to pick them up, because they are still little and the concert area is a big and unfamiliar area for these kids, we want to make sure that an adult (a parent or guardian) to pick them up, after picking them up, you are welcome to stay and finishing watching the concert (if you have other kids in other grade levels or not) or you are welcome to go home ( it might be late for some of our kids!)
If no adult or guardian picks up your child, they cannot be released back into the crowd because of safety issues, I do not want them to get lost. Pretty please make sure that you pick them up right after they perform, they will be waiting in the hallway with Mrs Christensen or me!)
AM class will perform first then exit the stage and then PM class will perform! Be alert!
* We also have a dress rehearsal on 5th feb, Wednesday, please make sure that your child wears the proper attire for this rehearsal ( no black clothes!) and their hair is gel or tied into buns accordingly!
Your children will be performing the same program for the whole school for the dress rehearsal!

Boba World
Parents!
HAPPY MONDAY~ ~
A super parent from the AM class recommended me this amazing restaurant,
BOBA WORLD, it is in WOODCROSS! It is really authentic SHANGHAI cuisine! I have went there over the weekend and tried it and it is REAL Chinese food!
Boba is a small locally owned family business! The shop owners are very very nice and sweet people! The food is really good, I have some take out menu that the shop owners gave me, I will put them in your child blue folder!
You have to try their noodles dishes, their noodles are all home made! Their bubble drinks, also known as chewing drinks are amazing! I love their Shanghai juicy dumplings! This is better than any dumplings you buy in any store! This makes me miss home!
Their address is :

Their address is :

next week agenda January 13th-17th
Parents,
This has been a crazy week but we survived! I really hope you can help me with addition at home, I have send home a lot of papers, the yellow paper is how to draw the circles for the addition problems, so they will not be confused, the salmon colored paper is practice paper for addition, the green and brown paper is for counting the dots worksheet and the pink paper is for number line.
Lots of papers! Do NOT turn it in, it is to practice at home. Thank you for doing that.
Addition practice is going to be re-taught again, there are some very high level students that can even add 2 digits with 2 digits:) while some that still struggle with the concept of addition, I am not comparing! Just to let you know what a far range of students we have.
Pretty please with sugar on top, please please please practice with them at home, especially going over the vocabulary on addition, equals etc! This will help classroom practice a lot easier!

Addition woes
Dear parents,
We started addition this week and there were some frustrated and some that had no idea what adding means. I hope you have gone over the vocabulary with them in Chinese on add, equals etc. This helps them to have a head start on the language part on math.
First of all, I want them to use manipulatives when they do their addition problem.
for example 1+1=
they have to draw 0 + 0 =
*circle plus circle equals?
then they count the circles one,two
therefore the answer is 2
so 1+1= 2
0 + 0 = 0 (using circles to draw, note the placement of the circles)
0
There have been a lot of different ways drawing the circles, I want them to use a standard way to draw to avoid confusion and makes it easier for them to count and recognize.
I have send out an email already (and will send home a note tomorrow-thurs) on how to draw those circles. Please refer to that attachment.
Hopefully this helps. I have even use ten blocks to help some with addition, it has helped many, but some are still confused, I will try my best to reteach until most or all of the students get addition.
Most common mistakes I note when they are drawing circles:
1. They draw their circles everywhere and they end up getting confused how many circles are there
for example 1+1=
they draw 00000000000000 0000 00000 000
2. Their circles are unclear and overlap with other circles so they get confused with how many circles are there
3. if the problem is 1+3, they should draw 1 circle + 3 circles, right? but some end up drawing 2 circles + 4 circles, so their answer will be wrong, if they draw the circles on the question wrongly
for example 1+3
they draw 00+ 0000 (which is the wrong amount)
4. They write their add sign after the equals sign, so they get confused
for example 1+2
they write it like this 000=+
5. they write their answer first and then draw some circles and then the answer
for example 1+3
they write it like this 4 000+0=
Hopefully this helps. I will send home a practice sheet with the first example done for you, that way you can practice.

Audio recordings for 3D shapes and Addition vocabularies
Parents,
Hope you had a good weekend! I trust all of you have no problems with sound cloud and the link. I am posting below 2 links, the first link is the vocabulary for the 3D shapes.
*Please take note that cone and cylinder have the same 1st and last word, the middle word is different but may sound the same to others, I will try and exaggerate the sound for the middle word
https://soundcloud.com/lin-lao-shi/sets/3d-shapes
The second link is for the vocabulary use for addition. Please take note of that, they need to understand the vocabulary.
https://soundcloud.com/lin-lao-shi/sets/addtion-vocab
Hopefully this helps you a lot!
Don't forget, we have tests this week! Remember to revise with them!
ps, please try your best to make sure your child comes on time to school/class.

Parents...PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT.............
Due to the crazy cold mornings, the children are allowed inside the gym in the mornings instead of waiting outside in the cold before school starts. I notice that a lot of students tend to wonder in the hallways and not come to class on time.
Please help me talk to them at home about coming straight to the classroom when the school bells rings, this is a safety issue!!!!
Thanks!
Have a great weekend!

welcome back!
WELCOME BACK Parents and Students from a long long break...
Hope you all had a great Christmas and here's to a GREAT 2014 NEW YEAR AHEAD OF US!
*CHEERS! :)
Thanks for all the generous gifts, gifts cards, food, soap, crafts, cards etc! We appreciate all!
Business:
1. If you have anymore Lysol/Clorox wipes and hand sanitizers (big and small bottles) pretty please with sugar on top, if you can kindly donate some! We are running dry on our supplies :)
2. SEP coming up (parent teacher conference!)
The last week of January (27th onwards)
early out week all week, I will check and let you know when you can schedule your appointment, please come on time, as we are packed back to back on time, being late makes the schedule messy.
Remember to bring your goals that we set the last SEP, so we can review.
3. PLEASE COME EARLY OR ON TIME TO SCHOOL AM AND PM CLASS
Pretty please, it is very important to come early, I know it is getting cold and the weather gets crazy sometimes but try your very best to be punctual :)
4. CHINESE NEW YEAR CONCERT is coming up! YAY! We have been practicing some songs, more information to come.
*because this is a very short week, we will be reviewing a lot of vocabularies and preparing for our tests next week.
Agenda for next week (6-10 January, 2014)
1. CHINESE-
we will start 3-D shapes, this will be on the end of the year assessment, so please take note!
CUBE----SPHERE----CONE----CYLINDER----
2. MATH----we will review 1-50
*please note, I taught them a trick on the dots worksheet, instead of counting from scratch 1,2,3,4, till 49 (for example) they can count each box as 10,20,30,40, then count 9 more. This save times and it is more efficient.
However, it has confused a very very tiny portion of students ( 1-3 students) on this concept, if it helps them to count from 1 onwards, they are welcomed to do so.
* there are still a small amount of students that still struggle with their numbers and concept of sequencing in counting and writing numbers, please take time and help me practice with them at home, this will make their addition and subtraction unit and other parts of math easier if they know their numbers and the concept of numbers.
we will start simple addition, the concept of adding 1
example 1+1=? 3+1=? etc
3. SCIENCE: We will review and compare differences between each weather element, sun, rain, snow, lightening, wind, cloud.
* some children are confused with rain and snow because they both have the same first words BUT the second words of rain and snow are DIFFERENT. Make sure to emphasize the difference
4. TESTS: Science---Weather elements (must be able to draw and say the different vocabularies)
Math----------1-50 (review the dots worksheet)
Hope you all had a great Christmas and here's to a GREAT 2014 NEW YEAR AHEAD OF US!
