VENUE: BOUNTIFUL HIGH
DATE/DAY: 7TH FEB, 2013-FRIDAY

What Is Chinese New Year?

- Chinese New Year is a very important and big event (bigger than Christmas!) in my country, I hope to share some little insight on what Chinese New Year is. It is basically the new year (on the Chinese Luna Calendar, which is different every year) We believe that we need to get ready before New Year comes, we clean the house before, buy new clothes, shoes  because we want to be clean, to look our best, to have a new start for the New Year. We do not clean the house during the Chinese New Year ( which last a whole week!) because we believe that we are 'sweeping/ cleaning away good luck' This year Chinese New Year falls on January 31st, Friday ( which is also the day of our classroom party!) We believe the color red is a good luck color and we wear the color red and decorate our house with red packets , red cloths to bring in good luck. There is short story on why red is a good luck color ( I will show the video to your kids, it is in Chinese but I think it is simple to understand!) On the Eve of Chinese New Year, we have a big dinner with immediate family and grandparents, this dinner is important, we believe everyone of the family members need to be there because families are important in the Chinese culture. We eat a big feast and it usually have special noodles( this noodles symbolizes good luck, longevity, good health etc (all the good stuff). The children will try the best to stay up as late as possible because we believe that the longer they stay up, the longer their parents will live! :) Chinese New Year morning, we wake up early, shower, put on our new attire, shoes, make sure we look our best, we kneel down and take 2 mandarin oranges (which symbolizes good luck) and present it to our parents, we greet them with best wishes like ( good health, happy life, etc) and then take our mandarin oranges and give us red packets( filled with money) and wish us good luck wishes in return ( success in school, good health, etc) then we go to our relatives houses and wish our grandparents and aunts and uncles. This is really fun for the kids especially because we have a lot of red packets (which means good luck) and money! yay! There are usually a lot of different snacks and candies during Chinese new year. We usually have a big lunch/ feast with our extended family (usually in the grandparents house) and play games like mahjong, card games, watch movies etc. It is such a fun time. The rest of the Chinese New Year week is for visiting friends/ neighbors and just spending time with family.

*hope this helps!

Special things to note for the Chinese New Year Program:

- Please do NOT wear black clothes during the program, black color clothes symbolizes death, funeral, this is very bad omen to wear for Chinese New Year! please please please, please!

-all boys and girls should wear a red T shirt (michaels, walmart or target sells cheap plain white shirt for kids), preferably with no words on it, just plain red, if not you can wear a shirt inside out, and blue jeans or brown pants or leggings (For the girls) *if you have a Chinese attire, your child is most welcome to wear it, please check with me, if you are not sure!
Do NOT wear sleeveless attire!

- For the boys, please make sure their hair is gel back and combed nicely
-For the girls, please make sure their hair is tied into 2 buns
(see picture for details), try to use red ribbons at the bottom of buns, you are welcome to use glitter on their hair too.
*if you want to put make up on them, you are welcome to BUT, please don't overdo the make up!

-Please make sure you come early for the program as we are the first to perform, please come at 5:40pm, DO NOT BE LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We still need to get ready and warm up before the program starts, I would advise coming early to get good seats and good parking!

-The program will be as follows, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade and 4th grade.

- Please make sure that after our cute kids perform (for kindergarten) that you are in the hallway, waiting to pick them up, because they are still little and the concert area is a big and unfamiliar area for these kids, we want to make sure that an adult (a parent or guardian) to pick them up, after picking them up, you are welcome to stay and finishing watching the concert (if you have other kids in other grade levels or not) or you are welcome to go home ( it might be late for some of our kids!)
If no adult or guardian picks up your child, they cannot be released back into the crowd because of safety issues, I do not want them to get lost. Pretty please make sure that you pick them up right after they perform, they will be waiting in the hallway with Mrs Christensen or me!)

AM class will perform first then exit the stage and then PM class will perform! Be alert!

* We also have a dress rehearsal on 5th feb, Wednesday, please make sure that your child wears the proper attire for this rehearsal ( no black clothes!) and their hair is gel or tied into buns accordingly!
Your children will be performing the same program for the whole school for the dress rehearsal!

Please make sure you read all of the above as it is very important!!!!!

Thank you!
